Types of Glass-to-Metal Seals

Characteristics of Glass-to-Metal Seals

Hermetic Seal

Ensures airtight and vacuum-tight connections, preventing moisture and gas intrusion. In fact, the compressive strength of glass is ten to twenty times higher than its tensile strength. This is why compression seals are typically used for designs with requirements for high mechanical robustness.

Electrical Insulation

Glass functions as a highly effective electrical insulator within the seal, isolating conductors and preventing short circuits. This makes it ideal for applications where both electrical isolation and environmental protection are required.

Thermal Compatibility

The thermal expansion coefficients of the glass and metal must be closely matched to maintain the integrity of the seal during temperature changes. This compatibility helps prevent cracking, separation, or seal failure due to thermal stress.
